Ebonised Console
So French, so nice!
This console was made in the 1820s - its features include an original carerra marble top and an ornate Empire escutcheon, which decorates the piece's central drawer. Also brass ormulu moulds and finials at the top of the two tapered columns. Very pretty!
The original purpose of the console's mounted mercury mirror was to allow the ladies to twirl in front of it and check their petticoats were straight.
Often referred to as a petticoat table or console....I say there should be more petticoats and twirling.
