Military Chest
Military chests are still very popular. This is an Anglo-Indian chest from about 1820, probably built in the East by an English cabinet maker. Made of teak, I think.
These two part chests were carved between battles, before being transported on the back of the brigadier's donkey. The handles needed to be flush with the drawers so as not to hurt the mule, or get broken off.
When arriving at the next battle the chests were reassmbled on their bun feet, in the brigadier's tent. Scotch and soda anyone?
Very British, very nice.
