Painted Pine Chest of Drawers
An early 19th century English chest of five drawers. The proportions of this piece make it very attractive.
These chests are great quality, often made in the north of England from Baltic pine shipped back from Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia, when cast iron and coal were exported from the region.
The very fine grained timber (slow growing pine) used was almost always painted, marbled or stippled.
This chest, including the original turned knobs, is finished in a soft grey with a charcoal overglaze. The drawers run beautifully.
