Important Norrie New Zealand Colonial Kauri Dressing Table

Recently re-discovered in Yorkshire this is an early New Zealand piece of furniture history. It is a large early Victorian dressing table with six small drawers flanking a jewellery compartment. Now I think the timbers used are as follows: the two top small drawers are blackmaire, the next two are burr totara, and the next are burr Puriri. Below the burr Kauri oval mirror there is a Rewarewa rail on turned mounts above a saddleback totara panel above the solid burr lift up lid. The mirror is flanked by two ornately carved Towahi( red) mounts, The dressing table is supported by two turned and carved Kauri posts over a birdseye Kauri base on bun feet with brown porcelain castors. This belongs in the Museum ( if anybody knows anyone there! ) JS................ Then William Cottrell commented .. must say imaginative dealer type description but very good on you for rescuing it from the Yorkshire lass who no doubt squeezed her pimples into that very mirror.......aaaah the history and her granny's teeth still in the wee drawer.......so original!!!!! Date c. 1880 +, made by William Norrie, Shortland Street. Electroplate handles don't lie. Can you spot a registration number anywhere on them, will give an absolute date? Matches almost one that I own, picture in my book, handles bit different and some timbers. Cannot tell timbers from the photo but typically the gallery is kohekohe with a rewarewa rail. Looks like flame kauri panel below, most of the rest is very good mottled kauri except the jewelry drawers. Wee bit suspicious of the black maire , colour too brown. Mirror supports very unlikely to be towhai. Look again you may find they are kauri or rimu that has been tinted or oiled. Very end of Grecian influence in 19 th cent. really just the legs. Would be good to see the handle pattern better, Norrie was always very flamboyant in his selection, may be an 'Elizabethan' style. Darn good piece all the same
